Radiation is nothing but a process in which Energy is emitted as waves or particles. The complete process in which energy is emitting from one body, transmitted through a medium or space and absorbed by another body.

Radiation exists at every corner of the earth. The intensity of the radiation verifies from one place to another. Due to low level of radiation, we are unable to feel its impact. It is produced naturally and artificially also. Medical equipment’s like x-ray machines, microwaves, radio frequency, ultraviolet rays, gamma, and others are source of radiation.

Alpha particles have a short range and can be stopped by a sheet of paper or the outer layer of skin. Beta particles can travel farther and can be reduced by suitable shielding. Gamma rays are highly penetrating and require appropriate dense shielding. Neutrons can travel through substantial distances and are best managed using suitable hydrogen-rich and other engineered shielding. Cosmic rays reach the earth from space. Actual travel distance and shielding requirements depend on radiation type, energy and the environment.

Severe exposure to ionizing radiation can cause serious tissue injury and, at sufficiently high doses, acute radiation effects. Lower or repeated exposures can increase long-term health risks. Radiation protection therefore focuses on controlling exposure through time, distance and shielding, together with appropriate monitoring, procedures and professional oversight.
